You might not know this, but you´ve probably seen Stonehaven a few times. A picture of its castle, Dunnotar Castle, is one of Windows 7´s wallpapers. Stonehaven is also known for something that, for this blog´s purpose, had a lot more interest than that. It is the birthplace of… the deep fried Mars bar!!! and that is exactly what it sounds… A Mars chocolate bar, covered in batter and deep fried in oil.
Stonehaven is a 15min train ride south of Aberdeen along the coast. It’s a small fishing village and as such also has a few fish and chips shops dotted around. After a long walk along the coast to reach the castle, we decided to try The Bay Fish & Chips by the seaside (it had very good reviews, a vast collection of excellence awards hanging from the walls, and a considerable queue!).
We ordered a couple of haddock portions with chips, added the customary vinegar, and sat to eat at the only table outside, which just by chance just got vacant. The fish was delicious, and so were the chips, handcut and chunky.
After lunch, we headed on to our main target… The Mars bar! Another fish and chips shop in the village, The Carron, boasts being the first one deep-frying chocolate bars, and we had to try one.
I have to say I didn’t have too much hope in it. We actually ordered just one to share, but it was quite good! It reminded me of Spanish churros, but filled with delicious melting chocolate. It’s maybe not something I would have every day, but it was definitely tasty!
Finally, as if we hadn’t had enough for lunch (we actually skipped dinner that night), we couldn’t help but trying the seaside ice cream parlour next to The Bay Fish and Chips, with a similar queue. It’s called Aunty Betty’s, and also sells old-fashioned sweets and chocolate.
They had many different flavours of ice-cream, and would add a random combination of toppings on them for free, if you wanted. It was a nice touch of decoration on top of delicious ice cream –it is currently n.2 on TripAdvisor’s Top things to do in Stonehaven, after Dunnotar Castle!

Oye, vámonos a Aberd…digo… a Stonehaven!
Puede que no lo sepas, pero probablemente has visto Stonehaven alguna vez. Una foto de su castillo, el castillo de Dunnotar, es uno de los fondos de pantalla de Windows 7. Stonehaven también es conocido por algo que, para los propósitos de este blog, nos interesaba mucho más: es la cuna de…¡¡la chocolatina Mars frita!! Y eso es exactamente lo que dice, una chocolatina Mars, rebozada y frita en aceite.
Stonehaven está a 15 minutos al sur de Aberdeen bajando por la costa. Es un pueblecito pesquero, y como tal tiene varios establecimientos de fish&chips. Después de un largo paseo por la costa para ver el castillo, decidimos probar uno de ellos, el The Bay Fish & Chips, que estaba en el paseo marítimo (tenía muy buenas opiniones, una gran colección de premios colgados de la pared, y una cola considerable). Pedimos un par de porciones de pescado con patatas, que remojamos en vinagre como se hace aquí; y nos sentamos a comer en la única mesa que había fuera, y que justo quedó libre en ese momento. El pescado estaba delicioso, y las patatas fritas buenísimas, cortadas a mano y grandecitas.
Después de comer nos acercamos al objetivo principal, la chocolatina Mars. En otro fish & chips del pueblo, The Carron, presumen de ser los primeros que frieron chocolatinas, y teníamos que probarlas. Debo decir que no tenía mucha confianza en que me gustara, de hecho pedimos solo una para compartir, pero la verdad es que ¡estaba buena! Me recordó a comer churros, pero rellenos de chocolate derretido. Es algo que probablemente no comería todos los días, pero ¡estaba muy rica!
Por último, por si no habíamos comido suficiente ya (de hecho esa noche nos saltamos la cena) no pudimos resistirnos a probar la heladería del paseo, al lado de The Bay Fish and Chips y con una cola similar. Se llama Aunty Betty´s, y vende gominolas y dulces de los de toda la vida además de helados. Tenían todo tipo de sabores de helado, y además te los recubrían de chocolatitos y gominolas si querías. Quedaban unos helados buenísimos ¡y monísimos! Ahora mismo esta heladería está en el segundo puesto en TripAdvisor de “cosas que hacer en Stonehaven”, después del Castillo de Dunnotar.
Resumiendo nuestro día en Stonehaven: mucha comida rica para probar, ¡muy poco tiempo!
